About This Project

The Mu'umu'u Archive is an online database featuring high-quality crowdsourced photographs of mu'umu'u collections and stories for preservation, inspiration, education, and community connection.

This website was first envisioned in 2018 and officially launched in 2022 with the assistance of a Hawai'i State Foundation for Culture and the Arts Individual Artist grant.

These dresses are at risk of being destroyed, upcycled, forgotten and discarded. Physical preservation is extremely difficult and belongs in the purview of an individual owner/wearer. This website provides a central and accessible place to house these garments in perpetuity.
